Abstract :
Radiation necrosis is a dose-limiting side effect of radiation therapy for brain lesions. Several treatment options are available. However, they offer limited symptomatic relief and important side effects. One supplement, showing great promise in alleviating the neurological symptoms and the associated cerebral edema, is Boswellia serrata. This is the case of a 44-year-old male, diagnosed with an anaplastic, grade III oligodendroglioma, which was surgically removed. Conventional radiation therapy was used on the tumor bed and a follow-up MRI showed no residual disease. Two years later, the patient became symptomatic again and an MRI confirmed two recurrent lesions, that were treated soon after with fSRS. Two months later, the patient developed headaches and balance impairment and was diagnosed by MRI spectroscopy with radiation necrosis. He was treated using a combined approach (corticosteroids, Bevacizumab, Hyperbaric Oxygen, and Boswellia serrata) and showed impressive improvement in his symptoms and on MRI imaging.
